On September 24, representatives of the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs – First Vice-Rector, Doctor of Law, Professor Yehor Nazymko and Head of the Department of Administrative and Legal Disciplines of Faculty № 2, Candidate of Law, Professor Olha Merdova presented the best practices of the DonSUIA in the field of internationalization and openness of scientific projects at the round table “Law and Open Science: Normative Framework of Open Science and Principles in Law studies”. The event was held within the framework of the VIII Kharkiv International Legal Forum.
During his report, Yehor Nazymko outlined the achievements of the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs on the implementation of the principles of open science. He noted that one of the important components of the University’s activities in this area is participation in the implementation of the OPTIMA project, whose name can be translated as “open practices, transparency and integrity for modern higher education”. It is implemented within the Erasmus + program, and its coordinator is Lviv Polytechnic National University. The project aims to introduce ideas and practices of open science in Ukraine to improve the quality of educational services. Among the priorities: work with displaced Ukrainian Universities, focus on climate change and inclusiveness through the use of modern information technologies.
The speaker also admitted that another manifestation of following the principles of open science was the involvement of the University scientists in the professional network of the project “Support to Ukraine in countering the risks of proliferating small arms and light weapons as a result of Russia’s aggressive war”, which is being implemented by the independent non-governmental organization Center for Security Studies “SENSE” together with the Swiss Foundation of the Higher Institute for International and Development Studies.
In her report Olha Merdova pointed out that the overall goal of this project is to prevent and reduce security threats to the population that may arise due to illegal arms trafficking. It aims to ensure that relevant Ukrainian and international politicians, practitioners and the public benefit from timely, relevant and high-quality research to counter the proliferation of illegal small arms and light weapons. To achieve this goal, the project creates and disseminates a wide range of research results, as well as promotes the exchange of information and training on the proliferation of small arms, including among an inclusive network of Ukrainian practitioners, scientists and non-governmental organizations that deal with the circulation of weapons and wider security issues. So far, Ukraine lacks a holistic vision of the problem of arms trafficking and its consequences. This, in turn, makes it impossible to form a state policy against illegal arms trafficking, reducing its understanding only to the activities of law enforcement bodies. However, the factors and consequences of weapons proliferation in illicit trafficking are manifested in many spheres – social, security, economic, international relations, especially considering the factor of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the European integration processes of our state.
The Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs expresses its gratitude to dean of the faculty of Law of the Zaporizhia National University, doctor of Law, professor, corresponding member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Lawyer of Ukraine Tetiana Kolomoiets and vice-rector for educational and methodological work of the National University of Law named after Yaroslav the Wise, corresponding member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, doctor of legal sciences, professor Oleg Yaroshenko for the opportunity to participate in the VIII Kharkiv International Legal Forum.
