On January 22, on the Day of Unity of Ukraine and the 105th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, participants of the international project held a patriotic event on the occasion of the Day of Unity of Ukraine in Vienna near the memorial plaque of the distinguished Ukrainian politician, scientist, founder of Ukrainian statehood Mykhailo Hrushevskyi.
The event was attended by the representatives of various structural units of the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs: “Police Academy”, Kryvyi Rih Educational and Scientific Institute, and the Faculty of Training Specialist for Criminal Police Units. Together with the representatives of other higher educational institutions with specific learning conditions and the Department of Education, Science and Sports of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, they marked the essence of the idea of the unity of the Ukrainians by using Ukrainian symbols.
On January 22, 1918, the Central Rada adopted the IV-th Universal, which proclaimed the independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and confirmed its right to be “an independent, free, sovereign state of the Ukrainian people.” For the first time in the 20th century, Ukraine declared its independence. More than 100 years ago, after several centuries of struggle, Ukrainian state began to be built, state symbols were established: the coat of arms, anthem and flag. The national army was being formed, the financial system, education, culture, etc. were being developed.
At the same time, in 1918 in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. the Ukrainians created the West Ukrainian People’s Republic. The Ukrainians sought unification with the goal of further joint development of a single state.
On January 22, 1919, the representatives of both Ukrainian states proclaimed the Act of Unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic on Sofia Square in Kyiv. For the first time in many centuries historical Ukrainian regions were united into one state.
The idea of unity was and remains a basic national value of the Ukrainians. And now it is still the necessary prerequisite for the success of our resistance to external aggression.
