In today’s conditions, communication with defenders of Ukraine requires special knowledge and skills on the part of law enforcement officers. The Department of the Main Inspection and Human Rights Compliance of the National Police of Ukraine, together with the Ukrainian Legal Aid Foundation and the International Renaissance Foundation, initiated implementation of a systematic approach to solving this problem.
A dialogue between representatives of the National Police of Ukraine and the public “Police in interaction with veterans: how police contribute to reintegration of people with combat experience into community life” was held at the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs.
The event brought together police officers, war veterans, psychologists, and public activists. The goal of the initiative is to create conditions for a dignified and successful adaptation of the military to civil life.
A representative of the Department of the Main Inspection and Human Rights Compliance of the National Police of Ukraine, Mykola Sulzhuk, and head of the Personnel Management Department of the MONP in the Kirovohrad region, Oleksandr Horbenko, spoke about the areas of police cooperation with veterans, interaction with veterans and public organizations, as well as specialized training of personnel.
Those present discussed examples of successful police interaction with veterans at the local level, prospects for developing veteran support in the region, and the role of law enforcement agencies in this process.
In the course of training on developing resilience and stress resistance, law enforcement officers with combat experience received practical tools to strengthen psycho-emotional resilience of their own, as well as of veterans and their families. The classes were conducted by a military psychologist Rustam Taranenko, head of the department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines of the DonSUIA, Angela Helbak, and representatives of public organizations.
After familiarizing with art therapy techniques and social support methods, the participants received certificates confirming their completing the relevant training.
Currently, the DonSUIA comprehensively supports the military, providing them with the necessary assistance in the field of psychological rehabilitation, physical recovery and legal support. Considerable attention is also paid to the issues of employment and integration into society. Another area of work is ensuring accessibility of education, in particular by implementing barrier-free solutions at the University driving school.
The University will continue to participate in creation and implementation of the initiatives aimed at social adaptation of veterans and strengthening social cohesion.
