In the modern world, professionalism of a law enforcement officer is measured not only by knowledge of the laws, but also by the ability to communicate with people on the basis of respect, equality and humanity. That is why an educational event on the topic “Ethical and barrier-free communication with disabled people” was held for cadets at the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs. It was conducted by Kateryna Voievoda, Rector’s Assistant for Gender Issues.
During the meeting, the participants considered the key principles of interaction with disabled people – respect for dignity, autonomy, use of correct terminology and avoidance of stereotypes in communication.
The outlined approaches became the basis for further practical development of communicative situations. In particular, those present learned the algorithms for providing assistance: how to correctly offer support without violating personal boundaries, and how to act in various situations of professional interaction. Particular attention was paid to the specifics of communication with people with visual, hearing, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial disabilities.
Finally, the participants received recommendations on using simple and clear language, alternative formats for presenting information, and avoiding discriminatory statements in their work.
