Rector of the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs, Serhii Vitvitskyi, took part in a round table on the occasion of the start of the 8th Global Road Safety Week under the auspices of the United Nations as part of implementing activities of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.
The organizers of the event were: the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the SE “Ukrainian Research Institute of Transport Medicine” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (Kyiv Interregional Branch), and the ICF “Assistance to Victims of Road Accidents”.
The roundtable participants discussed the situation regarding road safety in Ukraine; new legislative initiatives and changes in this area; the condition of roads and street infrastructure, educational programs for young road users, and other relevant issues.
Addressing the audience, the DonSUIA rector Serhii Vitvitskyi, focused on the main idea of the Week – to make pedestrian and bicycle traffic safe, he also announced the results of a survey of parents’ public opinion conducted by the University scientists regarding schoolchildren’s bicycle mobility.
European practice shows that the method of bans in force in Ukraine – regarding the 14-year-old age of cyclists – is not effective. Therefore, following the goal of our country’s European integration, we must reconsider outdated approaches to ensuring sustainable mobility in general and the safety of cyclists in particular”, noted Serhii Vitvitskyi.
