As part of the National Accessibility Week in Ukraine, the «Legal Protection» Clinic of the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs held a legal education event in the form of legal debates on the topic «Accessibility: the duty of the state or society?».

The speaker of the event was Nataliia Komnatna, head of the Kropyvnytskyi district branch of the Kirovohrad regional organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society. She emphasized that accessibility is not only about physical accessibility, but also about ensuring equal access to justice, education, medical and social assistance, employment, and full participation in community life.

In the course of debates, the higher education students, united in the «State» and «Society» teams, analyzed the responsibility of each party in the formation of a barrier-free space.

In addition to the discussion part, the participants worked on the development of interactive maps and municipal programs aimed at further development of a barrier-free space. Young people proposed their own initiatives to improve the accessibility of educational, social and administrative services, as well as mechanisms for interaction between state bodies, public organizations and local communities.

Based on the results of the event, the students concluded that creating a barrier-free environment is possible only provided that the state and society share the responsibility, an active civic position, and effective interaction of all stakeholders.
