For two weeks, at the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs, a team of certified trainers from Tetra Tech conducted a series of classes under the “Mine Safety Course” program for scientific and pedagogical staff of the department of tactical and special training and the cycle of special disciplines of the Mariupol Center for Initial Professional Training “Police Academy” of the Donetsk State Internal Affairs Department.
Tetra Tech is an executive partner of the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM/WRA) Worldwide Weapons Destruction Support Service (WDSS) project in Ukraine, providing support for humanitarian mine activity (HMA).
The goal of the program is to raise awareness of the mine threat and train qualified instructors for further conducting classes with different population categories.
Under the guidance of Tetra Tech’s liaison officer with the National Police of Ukraine, Mark Winfield, company mentor John Kandol, and instructor Dirk Guiliomi, the DonSUIA instructors practiced recognizing landmines; identifying missiles and determining grenades according to the main group and subgroup; assessing the signs of threats and dangers of explosive remnants of war and rules of conduct in case of their detection; interviewing techniques and communication skills; information methods for communicating important information to the civil population; practical skills of an instructor.
The training participants also acquired practical skills in conducting educational work in communities, educational institutions, and government bodies and received relevant certificates.
On behalf of the University rector, Serhii Vitvitskyi, dean of the faculty of training specialists for preventive activity units of the DonSUIA, Mykola Tyshlek, thanked the Tetra Tech company and its representatives for their professionalism, relevance of the educational material, and significant contribution to increasing the security of Ukrainian society in conditions of military threat.
