Recovery after serious injuries is not only medical procedures, but also a long journey of developing one’s own endurance. This is precisely, what the training for war veterans, regularly held at the Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs, is aimed at.
The classes are part of a large-scale project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine «Friendly Support», which is being implemented jointly with the «Unrestrained» initiative of the Agency for Mass Sports of Ukraine.
The rehabilitation is conducted by Head of the Department of Special Physical Training of the DonSUIA Ihor Shostak. Veterans Yevhen and Vadim, who after treatment are only beginning their journey to restoring physical capabilities, joined the training process.
Yevhen received a severe bullet wound to his forearm and is currently working on restoring mobility in his arm after surgery. Vadim, in his turn, is undergoing rehabilitation after a shin injury. Considering the established disability group, an individual approach to training has been developed for each of them, taking into account their state of health and doctors’ recommendations.
During the training, the participants were introduced to the exercise equipment and the way of using it. After that, they performed basic aerobic exercises with moderate intensity – in particular, classes on a treadmill and an exercise bike, and also supplemented the training with a set of exercises to strengthen the muscles of the upper and lower back.
